SUSTAINABLE TECHNOLOGY & DEVELOPMENT

Low-cost technology innovations for low-income stakeholders

Technology focus

Exploring the development and delivery of life-improving innovations

The aim of the thematic cluster on Sustainable Technology & Development is to focus on low-cost technology innovations that cater to low-income stakeholders. To be effective from a development perspective, technology innovations need to specifically focus on the vulnerable and economically weaker sections of society and must also consider the distribution model that is needed to bring these innovations to all stakeholders. This theme will therefore go beyond the discussion of technology innovations alone, but will also emphasise on business models through which such innovations can service the economically weaker sections of society.

The key areas that will be covered by this thematic cluster include “access to energy” and “water, sanitation & irrigation". While considering innovations and development from an access facilitation point of view, the focus will be both on innovative products and technologies and on the delivery ecosystem – including the related business model. The approach will involve sharing a series of case studies on innovations pioneered by the public sector, research institutions, and private corporations.

Potential impact on SDGs

Through its focus on sustainable technology & development for improving “access to energy” and “water, sanitation & irrigation for small and marginal farmers”, this theme contributes to achieving several SDGs. Regular and affordable access to electricity increases the standard of living of rural households (SDG 1), while clean energy sources in electricity-deficit areas ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all (SDG 7). Distribution of water purification units across villages in developing countries ensures access to safe and affordable drinking water (SDG 6) and helps combat water-borne diseases (SDG 3). Also, sustainable technology & development boosts productive employment and decent work for women and men (SDG 8) within local communities.
