Smart East Africa
Abdellatif Bouziani is a telecommunications professional with over 20 years of international experience in the industry. He is currently Group CEO for Smart, a mobile operator that launched in 2014 in three East African markets including Uganda, Burundi and Tanzania.
Abdellatif’s career began in France where he worked for the second largest telecoms operator, Cegetel for 5 years, followed by a posting in Kenya where he setup and successfully launched Kencell (now Airtel). In 2003, amidst the military involvement in Afghanistan, Abdellatif moved to Kabul where, as Technical Director, he launched the network for Afghanistan’s second mobile operator, Roshan, majority owned by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED).
In 2008, Abdellatif moved to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) as the CTO for Tigo, owned by Millicom and within 6 months of joining, Abdellatif was quickly promoted to CEO. During his tenure with Tigo, Abdellatif led the company from negative EBITDA to positive EBITDA of 37% in 3 years by introducing efficiencies and innovation to the organization.
Abdellatif graduated from EPITA Advanced Engineering College in Paris, France in 1995 and earned an Executive MBA from Harvard Business School in 2007. Abdellatif also attended executive programs at London Business School, Stanford Graduate Business School and at the International Institute of Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland.
