ROLE OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN ACHIEVING THE SDGs

A key driver for Agenda 2030

Through deploying increasingly innovative business approaches that respond to today’s challenges, with tomorrow’s problems in mind, Entrepreneurs play a key role in contributing to Agenda 2030 and attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Entrepreneurship contributes to building resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and fostering innovation.

However, entrepreneurs need a favourable and enabling business ecosystem to thrive and scale up their impact. Creating such an ecosystem requires various stakeholders to collaborate.

Entrepreneurial approaches provide novel ways for turning ideas into impact. More specifically, public-purpose-driven entrepreneurship is about understanding local needs and coming up with innovative solutions paired with appropriate business models that promote social inclusion and environmental resilience.

There is growing interest in the role science, technology, and innovation can play in addressing a broad set of societal challenges. However, identifying and/or designing and scaling appropriate solutions is no small undertaking. Transforming today’s economy into a mission economy requires a broad range of actors from different sectors to work together as they take on different roles in the process (such as research, innovation, regulation, market access and skill development). This raises its own challenge, as interactions between these actors within the entrepreneurial ecosystem are often not well understood, especially in the context of SDGs.

The Learning Lab is an interactive, hands-on participatory workshop aimed at bringing together different stakeholders who are passionate about SDGs and entrepreneurial approaches to achieving them. Following the release of a report on the topic, participants will be able to test a framework for better understanding of SDGs-driven innovation ecosystems.

Objectives of this session:

  • Present framework – building on concepts related to entrepreneurial ecosystems, place-based innovation, and the mission-oriented economy – aimed at fostering breakthrough partnerships at a local level to drive progress in the SDGs
  • Explore the role of different actors within an entrepreneurial ecosystem and the functions that such a network needs to fulfill in order to reach the mission around which it was constructed
  • Use the framework provided to help visualise the network of actors and their interactions in order to accelerate progress or partnerships for the SDGs
  • Use a systems thinking approach to identify gaps or bottlenecks that limit impact of entrepreneurial activities aimed at achieving targets at a local/national level and SDGs at a global level
  • Design and test integrated policy and technology innovations across different areas (e.g., resource mobilisation, impact monitoring, technology assessment, behavioural change) that further stimulate the ecosystem to meet its mission

Addressing the wide array of global, regional, and local sustainability challenges we face calls for collective action towards integrated technological and policy solutions. Scaling innovative or entrepreneurial solutions to such problems requires deep understanding of the complex dynamics that exist within ecosystems, including the actors involved and the functions they play.  More specifically, this means developing a localised understanding of needs and the contexts in which they evolve.

With a certain threshold of transparency regarding the various actors, their needs, and the interactions taking place between them, resources can be more effectively channelled to activate or initiate partnerships in underserved areas. Such an approach could also help scale existing ecosystems by improving the density of connections between actors, so that new partnerships are created and existing ones are strengthened.

Building on Mariana Mazzuccato’s seminal work on mission-oriented innovation, in particular the 2018 report titled Mission-Oriented Research & Innovation in the European Union: A problem-solving approach to fuel innovation-led growth, this session looks at place-based, SDGs inspired ecosystem thinking as a way to map and understand ecosystems to mobilise them towards achieving a mission economy.

Business leaders have a critical role to play in enabling attainment of the SDGs. Although awareness and consideration for sustainable development is rising within the business world, deep transformations are still needed and these are very challenging.

However, some companies are already incorporating sustainability within their overall strategies. In doing so, they are making commitments that impact the most fundamental parts of their business.

In February 2021, AB InBev signed a US$10.1 billion sustainability-linked revolving credit facility, coordinated by ING. In addition to being the largest ever Sustainability-Linked Loan (SLL), it is also the first among publicly listed alcoholic beverage companies. The milestone facility has a five-year term and includes a pricing mechanism based on performance in four key areas: water efficiency, recycled packaging, renewable energy and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

This session will dive deeper into the design and execution of this pioneer project, with the aim of inspiring other organisations. It will focus on how to integrate innovative financial mechanisms into business strategy, highlighting opportunities and challenges regarding set-up, monitoring and reporting, as well as looking into the broader corporate mindset.

Solving the wide array of global, regional and local challenges we face calls for integrated technological and policy solutions. This includes innovative approaches to business models, social inclusion, financing, and more. Entrepreneurship serves as an important engine for turning ideas into impact. To best address the pressing challenges of our time, entrepreneurial activities can be oriented in ways that accelerate progress towards the SDGs, thus contributing to a mission economy for the benefit of people and the planet.

Transforming today’s economy into a mission economy requires a broad range of actors from different sectors to work together, taking on different roles in the process (such as research, innovation, regulation, market access, skill development). However, interactions between these actors within the entrepreneurial ecosystem are often not well understood, especially in the context of the SDGs.

This session will explore the role a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem can play in transitioning to the mission economy. It will also look at how mapping the ecosystem can lead to policy innovations which help accelerate the design and deployment of integrated solutions.

Sustainability reporting helps companies and organisations understand and manage their impact on people and planet. Creating the reports is an important exercise for identifying impact, related risks and ways to mitigate and reduce them, while also identifying new business opportunities. This should lead to taking the necessary action which defines being a responsible, trustworthy company working towards a more sustainable world.

Since 1997, the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has been developing a common global language for describing sustainability impacts, to help organisations deliver sustainability reports in a consistent and credible way. Approximately 10,000 companies worldwide have already adopted the GRI Standards, which are freely available for use by all organisations. Important aspects within the GRI Standards include multistakeholder approaches, double materiality and focus on impact.

This plenary session will discuss current trends in sustainability reporting and provide inspiring examples of how it has impacted business for several large MENA and European companies, all of which have a global footprint and have used sustainability reporting to drive their sustainable business strategies.

Entrepreneurial approaches provide novel ways of turning ideas into impact.

Transforming today’s economy into a mission economy requires a broad range of actors from different sectors to work together, taking on different roles in the process (such as research, innovation, regulation, market access and skill development). This raises its own challenge, as interactions between these actors within the entrepreneurial ecosystem are often not well understood, especially in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The SDGs Labs are interactive, hands-on participatory workshops aimed at bringing together different stakeholders who are passionate about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and entrepreneurial approaches to achieving them. Participants will work in groups using a framework for better understanding SDGs-driven entrepreneurship ecosystems to explore case studies across regions and sectors.
